MICHAEL FLASTER

During his 30 years as a media producer and programmer, Flaster's executive roles included serving as Associate General Manager for KPBS Radio and Television. As a consultant, he advised a range of institutions, including National Public Radio, the broadcasting system of the Republic of Moldova and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and he taught in the Communication Departments of San Diego State University and Kent State University. In 1995, Flaster was named Public Television's Programmer of the Year, and his documentaries have appeared as part of the PBS national schedule. Flaster's work has been honored by the CPB, the San Diego Press Club, and the American Bar Association. His radio work has received first-place honors for Journalistic Excellence in Economic and Feature Reporting from the San Diego Press Club. His work as Television Executive Producer has been recognized three times with first-place honors by the Southern California Radio/Television News Directors Association. Additionally, he is the author of four U.S. patents and five international patents.

Flaster was Vice-Chair of the La Jolla Playhouse Board of Trustees and has served as President of the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture, Chair of the San Diego United Jewish Federation's Community Relations Council and Vice President of the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. He is past Board President for the San Diego Visual Arts Foundation and Vice President for LEAD San Diego, was past Chair of Rocky Mountain Public Television and served on the boards of the Public Radio Program Directors Association, the Association of Music Personnel in Public Radio and Music from Stan Hywet.

Flaster has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from SUNY Cortland and a Master of Arts degree in Telecommunications and Journalism from Kent State University. He has taught in the Communication Departments of San Diego State University and Kent State University, was a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and an Executive in Residence in the Communication Studies Department at the State University of New York College at Cortland. Additionally, he has lectured at New York University, served as Program Advisor for the UCSD Extension Digital Arts Center and was Strategic Advisor for UCSD ArtPower's "Filmatic Festival."

Flaster and his wife, Susanna, also a dedicated volunteer, have two children and five grandchildren living in San Diego. They are avid travelers, having visited all seven continents at least twice and more than 80 countries. He enjoys theater and music.
