KAREN WINSTON

Karen Winston is a marketing and communications professional with more than 40 years of experience spanning strategic planning and execution for both nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Her expertise covers the full marketing and communications spectrum—from strategy development and content creation to implementation and measurable results.

Most recently, Karen served Alliance Healthcare Foundation for eight years as Director of Communications and Special Initiatives. In this role, she managed three cycles of the Innovation Initiative, a $1 million challenge grant, and served as project manager for the foundation’s affiliation in developing the Imperial Valley Wellness Foundation. Prior to AHF, she served as Executive Director of the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum and as Vice President of Programs for CONNECT.

Karen has also held several volunteer leadership roles in the community. She served as a board member and later chair of the board for the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum, and she has provided pro bono marketing consulting and facilitation to the Museum of Making Music and the John Malashock Dance Company. Earlier in her career, she served on the boards of the UC San Diego Alumni Association and Sushi Performance Art Gallery.

Karen earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications/Sociology, with a minor in French Literature, from UC San Diego.

Recently retired from full-time work, Karen is enjoying more travel, exercise, and new adventures. She has two grown sons who live in San Francisco and is a proud Nana to an almost three-year-old grandson and a newborn granddaughter. Her hobbies include pickleball, hiking, wine tasting, piano, guitar, travel, and creative writing.
